Tabulator

MarkdownPlus supports a simple notation for achieving a tabulator effect.

(Without this feature you have to use a work around, e.g. impropre use of a table.)

Simple Example:

A       ␣␣>>␣ BBBB
CCC  ␣␣>>␣ D

Output:

A
BBBB
CCC
D

Note:
The pattern >> to be recognized must be preceeded by at least 2 white-spaces and followed by 1 white-space.
Otherwise the pattern gets intercepted by Smartypants and rendered as ">>" (if Smartypants option is enabled).

HTML Output:

<div class='pfy-tabulator-wrapper pfy-tabulator-wrapper-1'>
  <span class='c1' style='width:6em;'>A</span>
  <span class='c2' style='width:calc(100% - 72px);'>BBBB</span>
</div>

<div class='pfy-tabulator-wrapper pfy-tabulator-wrapper-1'>
  <span class='c1' style='width:6em;'>CCC</span>
  <span class='c2' style='width:calc(100% - 72px);'>D</span>
</div>

As you can see in the HTML output, the text is wrapped into <div> and <span> element to achieve the effect.

Applying Tabulator-Width:

A    3em>> BBBB
CCC  >> D

Output:

A
BBBB
CCC
D

Note:
Subsequent lines inherit width information. (Actually, if multiple lines specify a width, the last one wins.)

Multiple Tabulators per Line

A       4em>> B  >> CC     2em>> D    // &larr; width 2em ignored
UUUU       >> V  >> WWWW      10em>> X

Output:

A
B
CC
D
UUUU
V
WWWW
X

Tabulators in List Elements

Tabulators also work within lists (ordered or unordered). However, width specifiers are not transfered to consecutive elements. You need to specify them for every list element.

- A   3em>> BBBB
- CCC >> D (&larr; width of previous element ignored)
- E   3em>> F

Output:

  • A
    BBBB
  • CCC
    D (← width of previous element ignored)
  • E
    F
